Notes

  1. Kerstin gave an update on the registration of the IGSN e.V., we are in the process of collecting one more signature, and then the e.V. will be registered in Germany.
  2. The website, [http://www.igsn.org] , was presented and KL asked for feedback on what content should be placed on it.
  3. The logo was discussed, the old logo will be sent around, it will be done in concert with the brochure.
  4. Other outreach activities:
    1. Idea to propose a session for AGU for the general topic of unique IDs and registration
    2. Piasecki: suggested EPA and USGS, Rick Hooper from CUAHSI may know contacts
    3. Kerstin: NASA via ESIP
    4. AGU - Discussion of booth for outreach, but due to the cost (monetary and human time), probably not worth it
    5. Piasecki: It is also important to advertise to individuals (perhaps through NSF data management plans)
    6. Decided that there should be an official one-two paragraphs about IGSN e.V. that can be copied and pasted to various list-servs and communities
    7. Places to send the EGU announcement:
      1. CZN Critical Zone Network
      2. Curators list
  5. Brochure
    1. should be generated in next 2 months, send out for comments
    2. Does anyone have a connection to a designer that can do that?
    3. It was suggested that the brochure and logo could be made part of a class project.
    4. Sky might be able to get people from his team at USGS or from the Art Institute in Denver.
  6. Membership
    1. Update from USGS (Sky B.), it may be possible to do something through a cooperative agreement or contract with academic members, this idea should be proposed to the other government agencies
    2. Went over the Membership page on the website and asked for feedback after the call, but decided that this is low priority since there is no urgency now
    3. Discussion of possible affiliate members
      1. Elsevier - who is interested in using SESAR and the IGSNs
      2. Open Geospatial Consortium
      3. Cathy Constable proposes inviting AGU as an affiliate member and then discussing with their editorial process, Cathy will find out since she served on their publications committee
      4. Walter will look in to that for GSA as well
  7. Architecture
    1. Jens discussed the proposal at [http://dokuwiki.gfz-potsdam.de/datawiki/doku.php?id=igsn:earth_science_metadata], suggests that is is discussed on the igsn-members list after the call
    2. Changes to the top level metadata: Fields that are no longer there:
      1. timestamp (what is the purpose of it? if one can be defined, it can go back in)
      2. status (it is unclear what that means)
      3. resource URI (because if the URL is transmitted in the registration process, there is a potential for a mismatch in the handle record and the metadata)
    3. The development of the top level registry is nearly complete, just waiting for the metadata profile to be finalized.
    4. Question: is the IGSN always public? Jens: not necessarily, it does not need to be accessible.
      1. SESAR samples can be private, the IGSN is registered but the metadata is not public
      2. Cathy: it is a good idea to have the private option if there is a period after the metadata are uploaded that they are likely to be updated
      3. Kerstin mentioned other reasons to keep metadata private (location of a valuable outcrop, etc.)
      4. These considerations may lie with the allocation agent though, and they don't push metadata to the top level registry yet if not ready
      5. Answer: the top level registry just registers what they get, because they refer back to the allocating agent
    5. Cathy suggests there is a two week comment period on the metadata profile, the comments should be written, a sub-group should look at the comments.
      1. Metadata Subgroup - Sky, Anthony Koppers (suggested by Cathy), Jens, (Steve Richards suggested by Sky)
      2. Namespace Sugroup - Anders, Cathy, (nominated: Ronald K (ICDP)), Kerstin, Jens
  8. Set the date for the next meeting
    1. May 31st, 10a EDT

Actions

  1. Kerstin send old IGSN logo around
  2. Identify possible conveners for the AGU session on UIDs and sample registries
  3. Everyone - identify more places to send EGU announcement
    1. Kerstin will draft a paragraph to advertise EGU splinter group for sending around to mailing list
  4. Brochure
    1. Make progress before the next call
  5. Cathy will look in to inviting AGU as an affiliate member (for publication/editorial process)
  6. Walt will look in to inviting GSA as affiliate member (for publication/editorial process)
  7. Everyone: Look at the metadata profile and comment back on the igsn-members list.
  8. Jens will ask Ronald Konze if he is interested in being in the Namespace subgroup
  9. Create category on the wiki for the minutes
  10. Write email to full list that the minutes have been posted
    1. Ask all to comment in next 2 weeks on the new top level metadata profile
    2. Let the group know know if you want to join the subgroups (Metadata or Namespace)
